Where Journeys Begin and End

The waterway is lively today, with catamarans gliding lazily in and out of the wharf. Smiling visitors lounge on deck, either setting off for a day of swimming with sea turtles and exploring shipwrecks, or returning with sun-kissed faces and sea-sprayed stories.

The Bridge That Named a City

Ahead, the Chamberlain Bridge beckons. This is the site of one of the island’s very first bridges — and the origin of the name ‘Bridgetown’. Once a simple swing bridge, it has been transformed into a modern lift bridge, separating the inner and outer basins of the careenage.

A Changing Tide

Just beyond the bridge, the calm waters of the inner basin are dotted with fishing vessels and pleasure craft. Today, these boats mainly serve the wonderful visitors who come to experience the island’s beauty, reflecting Barbados’ shift from a sugar-driven economy to one now buoyed by tourism.
